A second term in office for former President Donald Trump is taking shape. Recent reports suggest that Trump and his Trumpworld are not bluffing when he talks about establishing a far-right, authoritarian government if given the chance.
A Rolling Stone article revealed that multiple unnamed sources within Trump’s circle confirmed these reports. They acknowledged that Trump would eliminate any obstacles that stand in the way of his absolute executive power and seek vengeance against his political opponents. One source, identified as a close Trump adviser and former administration official, boldly stated, “Of course we aren’t f—ing bluffing.” Another source admitted, “Yes, we do really want to burn it all down,” referring to the more moderate wing of the GOP that may try to restrain Trump’s worst impulses.
Even Sarah Matthews, who served as a deputy White House press secretary in the Trump administration, has turned against the former president. She endorsed his chief rival, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, in the 2024 GOP primary. Matthews expressed concern that in a second term, Trump would be surrounded by people who wouldn’t push back on his authoritarian ideas. She believes that Trump now understands how to manipulate and game the levers of government.
One significant aspect of Trump’s potential second term is the involvement of the far-right Heritage Foundation’s “Project 2025” initiative. One of the key proposals under this project is the enactment of an executive order called “Schedule F.” This order aims to remove existing guardrails for federal civil service, significantly increase the number of presidential appointees in federal agencies, and expand their influence.
Heritage Foundation staff is already vetting potential appointees for these positions. Although Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita claims that only Trump himself will decide on executive policy and staffing, the inclusion of former Trump White House officials, such as John McEntee, as senior advisers to Project 2025 suggests otherwise.
Moreover, it has been rumored that Russ Vought, who leads Project 2025 partner organization Center for Renewing America, is a favored candidate for White House chief of staff in a hypothetical second Trump term. Vought’s recent writings indicate a desire for a “post-Constitutional” government, adding to the concerns about the drastic changes Trump may enact.
These claims are troubling and raise serious concerns about the potential consequences of a second term for Donald Trump. It is essential to remain informed and engaged in the political process to ensure the preservation of democratic principles and the protection of our rights and freedoms.
