Released earlier this month on Netflix, “Baby Reindeer” tells the story of a struggling standup comic who shows kindness to a woman at a pub, only to be met with intense stalking. The show became a surprise hit, but it seems that behind the scenes, there is a real-life figure claiming to be the inspiration for the character “Martha.”
In an interview with the Daily Mail, a 58-year-old woman alleges that writer-director Richard Gadd is “bullying an older woman on television for fame and fortune.” While Gadd has admitted that the show is inspired by real life, he has emphasized that it is not a documentary. He described it as “lightly fictionalized” and has taken great lengths to disguise the woman’s identity. However, viewers are not heeding Gadd’s request to stop speculating about the real-life inspiration.
According to the unnamed woman, she has received death threats and abuse from Richard Gadd supporters online. She claims that Gadd is using “Baby Reindeer” to stalk her and that she is the real victim in this situation. Similarly to the character on the show, the woman is Scottish, studied law, is approximately 20 years older than Gadd, and uses explicit language both in speech and writing. She also has a history of stalking, which has been covered in the press.
The woman is uncertain about the physical resemblance between herself and the actress playing her, Jessica Gunning. However, the Mail asserts that there is an “uncanny” resemblance. The woman humorously remarks that the actress looks like her after COVID lock-down. The unnamed lady is still deciding whether or not to take legal action.
