It has been reported that former President Donald Trump has no intention of letting his felony conviction stand. In fact, he is enlisting the help of congressional Republicans to undermine the case. According to Politico, just after his conviction on May 31st, Trump called House Speaker Mike Johnson and expressed his anger over the verdict. In an expletive-filled rant, Trump reportedly said, “We have to overturn this.” Johnson, who is already dealing with challenges from hardline members of his party, has positioned himself as a close ally to the former president in order to protect his position. He was among the House Republicans who publicly criticized the trial on Trump’s behalf, and this reported phone call likely set the tone for Johnson’s public statements following the conviction.
Johnson even went on Fox News after the conviction to say that he believed the Supreme Court should step in on the matter. He stated that he personally knows many of the justices and believes they are deeply concerned about the verdict. Johnson expressed confidence that the conviction will be overturned, although he acknowledged that it may take some time to accomplish. It is worth noting that Trump has been pushing for a law that would shield presidents from non-federal prosecutions, and Johnson is one of the primary co-sponsors of that bill.
In addition to his efforts to overturn the conviction, Trump is at the Capitol to discuss his plans for a potential second term in office with Republican lawmakers. This will be his first visit since the January 6th insurrection, and Johnson has been asked if he plans to talk to Trump about not inciting another attack and committing to the peaceful transfer of power. Johnson responded by saying that both he and Trump respect the peaceful transfer of power.
