Before the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch came to be, the family had to travel the Oregon Trail, for a bit, and then head up to Montana. That’s the story told in the Paramount+ Yellowstone prequel limited series, 1883. The Country Music royal couple Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are the stars of this drama, and are better than expected. And that’s saying a lot because they are both extremely talented, both in their music careers and as actors.
The shining star of 1883 is actor Isabel May (Young Sheldon, Run Hide Fight). She co-stars as Elsa Dutton and also plays the role of narrator. The poetic words written by Taylor Sheridan, and spoken by May, add the depth, passion, and connection needed to bring this story to life.
The authenticity is so good throughout all 10 episodes of 1883. The only thing that might take you out of this close-to-perfect Western is the pearly white teeth on some of the actors. They must have had some next-level dentistry going on back then on the trail. We’re talking to you, Eric Nelsen! He IS fantastic as Ennis.
Sam Elliott’s voice is the thing legends are made of. His story is another highlight, one of many, in 1883. He plays the heartbroken Shea Brennan and has some emotionally powerful scenes with true heart. You’ll also see some fun cameos by other Hollywood legends including Tom Hanks and Billy Bob Thornton.
