New York’s highest court has made a decision regarding the gag order imposed on former US President Donald Trump in the hush money case, and it looks like the order will remain in effect.
According to a post on the court’s decision list, the court has declined to hear Trump’s appeal on the gag order. This means that the order, which was issued by Judge Juan Merchan, will continue to restrict Trump’s ability to make public statements about witnesses, jurors, prosecutors, court staff, and their families.
It’s worth noting that Trump had actually requested for the gag order to be terminated ahead of his sentencing in July. However, it seems that his request has been turned down. This gag order is in relation to a criminal case against Trump, in which he was convicted of 34 counts of business fraud for the hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels.
If you remember, back in March, just before the trial started, Judge Merchan granted prosecutors’ request for the gag order. This meant that Trump was not allowed to comment on certain individuals involved in the case. However, he was still able to express himself regarding the judge and the Manhattan District Attorney.
Unfortunately for Trump, he found himself in violation of the gag order not once, but ten times during the early stages of the trial. As a result, Merchan held him in criminal contempt and fined him $10,000. Merchan even raised the possibility of jailing Trump if he continued to disregard the order.
So, it’s clear that the gag order has had a significant impact on Trump’s ability to speak publicly about the case. And with the highest court refusing to hear his appeal, it looks like the order will remain in effect until further notice.
