In a potential violation of a gag order, former President Donald Trump expressed his anger towards the witnesses in his New York criminal trial. He referred to them as “sleazebags, lowlifes, and grifters” and called on his GOP allies to defend him against the allegations. However, such comments could violate the gag order, which prohibits him from commenting on participants in the trial.
Trump took to Truth Social to voice his frustrations, stating that it is unfair to have his Constitutional right to free speech taken away while those he opposes are allowed to say anything they want. He expressed his frustration at having to sit back and listen to lies and false statements being made against him without being able to respond. He also expressed concern that any response he makes could land him in prison for a long period of time, as he claims he has been told by a “Corrupt and Highly Conflicted Judge.” Judge Juan Merchan has already found Trump in contempt of court and fined him $10,000, and warned that jail time may follow for further violations.
Trump claimed that this “Fascist mindset” is coming from D.C., and accused Judges Engoron and Kaplan of being equally corrupt, albeit in different ways. He stated that what these individuals are doing is an attack on the Republican Party and the nation itself. He strongly emphasized the importance of the First Amendment, stating that it must stand free and strong. He concluded his statement with the words, “‘GIVE ME LIBERTY OR GIVE ME DEATH!'”
Although Trump made comments about an upcoming witness, which turned out to be Stormy Daniels, those comments were quickly deleted. Earlier, he had expressed his frustration that there was no time for lawyers to prepare and alleged that no judge had ever run a trial in such a biased and partisan manner. He labeled the judge as “CROOKED & HIGHLY CONFLICTED” and accused him of taking away his First Amendment rights. Trump mentioned that legal scholars and experts believe there is no case against him.
