In an interview with radio host Howard Stern, President Joe Biden expressed his willingness to debate Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 presidential election. When asked about Trump’s calls for a debate, Biden responded, “I am, somewhere, I don’t know when, but I am happy to debate him.” This is a change from his previous deflections on the question of a debate. In February, Biden simply stated, “If I were him, I’d want him to debate me, too. He’s got nothing else to do.”
In response to Biden’s remark, a Trump campaign adviser, Chris LaCivita, expressed his agreement and said, “Ok let’s set it up!” Trump himself even responded on social media, calling on the president to do the debate as early as Friday night and suggesting various locations and dates for the debate to take place. So far Trump has been all bark and no bite when it comes to debating the current President.
Despite Trump’s refusal to participate in any of the Republican primary debates, he has consistently called on Biden to debate him throughout the election cycle. In fact, a joint statement by a dozen major news organizations earlier this month urged both candidates to commit to debating one another. It seems that the call for a debate between Biden and Trump is growing louder and stronger.
During the interview with Stern, Biden also spoke openly about his family’s history, sharing details about his father’s business struggles, the loss of his first wife and infant daughter in a car accident, and the death of his son Beau to cancer. At one point, Biden’s voice even caught with emotion. Stern also prompted Biden to speak about recent rulings by the Supreme Court, particularly their decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Biden acknowledged that the court is extremely conservative, prompting Stern to ask if it drives him crazy. Biden replied, “It’s a really extremely conservative court, maybe the most conservative court in modern history.”
Biden’s willingness to debate Trump and his openness in discussing personal and political matters during the interview with Stern show a shift in his approach and a potential upcoming debate between the two candidates.
